Drowning in Fabric

Forever cleaning, organizing and creating

Dilemmas

I’m having some issues.

First, my Supernova.

I was (trying to) participate in the Supernova Quilt along. This was a partner swap where we each make two of six blocks and send each other the duplicates. I was really excited with the fabric and direction it was going. My partner is in the UK (I am US). I sent her my first two blocks, along with goodies, fabric gifts, etc. I haven’t heard from her at all since June. I have emailed many times. I have asked if she got my package. I have gotten nothing – no email, no blocks. I’ve even tried contacting her through an online group we are in (where we partnered up). Nothing. 😦 I don’t know what else to do. I guess give up on her? Finish it myself? 😦 I’m disappointed.

My other issue is my chevron quilt

I love this top. I’ve had it shelved for a long time trying to decide on the back. There was a fabric I wanted to use, but it is HTF and expensive. I had tried to buy it from one online shop that claimed they had ten yards in stock. I ordered five, and got less than 1.5 (in two pieces!). 😦 That’s all they had. I finally did order some more of it somewhere else. I waited, and waited and waited. And about the time I was going to call the company, it finally arrived. Like this:

Thankfully, somehow the fabric was still inside. (Yes, it arrived opened like that! I haven’t touched it.)  The mail is just getting worse and worse. See how it says 2 day? It took almost 15.

I’ve also been working on some blocks from leftover pieces to add into the back:

So, here’s the dilemma. I decided to use this quilt as a thank you to some friends who did me a huge favor. It is sort of a barter of skills. It took them some time to get their project to me, and I’ve sat on this for some time as well (because of the back, and being busy through the summer). Right about the time I was finally buckling down and getting the back started and ordering the fabric, they (shockingly) announced their separation. They’ve only been married two years and seemed like such a great couple. Now I don’t know how to handle this with my debt to them. They both contributed to my part of the trade. Do I still finish the quilt and let them figure it out? Do I make one for each? Do I ask? Forget it? Ideas/ help/wwyd????

ALYOF September: I need backs!

So, I know this isn’t sexy, but what I really need to be getting done are backs for all the quilt tops I have piling up, so that I can then finish the quilts! I do piece my backs, so it is a tiny bit of work, but I still tend to push them aside for all the other sewing I want to do. I need to focus on them.

I know I am only supposed to pick one item, so the most important back I need to make is the back for my econoblock:

I also would like to work on the back for my chevron:

And my Tula:

Wip Wednesday

With my son’s piggy quilt done (post to come) I got to turn my attention to my many WIPs piling up.

First of all, I need to make about 100 quilt backs. That’s probably going to become a big push in the near future. The finished tops are piling up as I move on to the next project and the next project. I need to get some of these finished. One of the more pressing ones is my chevron top which I am giving to a friend as a thank you. I had my eye on some fabric for the back, and purchased it when the shop finally offered a sale. While they said they had 10 yards in stock, I received barely two. Why does this keep happening to me? So, I’ve found the fabric one other place but for a lot of money. I am ruminating on what to do about this. In the meantime, I am playing with the leftover blocks to use in the back as well.

I’ve also been continuing to work more aggressively on my economy blocks. I think I am putting too much thought into this.

My machine keeps munching on the corners of the triangles.

Squaring up has to be one of my least favorite things to do, so while I was motivated to do it, I started working on my Tula blocks as well. Those are actually coming in fairly accurate. A little short if anything… hmm….

imageI’ve joined about a million project swaps this month too. I think I am a little stressed.

WIP Wednesday – Chevron top

20140105-172336.jpg

So, I’ve mentioned my chevron top from time to time here. But I don’t think I’ve ever actually shown it or discussed it really. I’ve been working on it on and off for a month or two. It’s been put aside as I’ve had other things come up or needed more fabric for it. After I finished the piggy top, I briefly considered my bento back. Well, I need fabric for it. Some is on order and some I still need to order. So that’s on hold again.

And next up was the chevron. At that point I had most of the blocks made. So, I finished up the last few blocks, trimmed, plotted and assembled. It took maybe a week? Not even. I used several different prints – had to do some editing on them too. And printed black or charcoal for the background. So now that top is done!

Which means I have another back to make.

WIP Wednesday

I’ve been working on a couple of things. I have basted my stack the deck quilt. After the behemoth quilts I’ve just made, this one seems really tiny. Basting went very quickly. I spent hours basting my aunt’s quilt… of course, I did it crooked the first time.

I realized I’ve never officially shown the back.

I used my leftover blocks in the small squares and in the large rectangle is my inspiration fabric, which didn’t actually get used in the front of the quilt. I believe I will be binding with it as well.

I am hoping since basting went so quickly, it will be quick to quilt as well, but I am nervous. Remember how I had all kinds of issues with tension while quilting my aunt’s quilt? Well, they are ongoing…. I started working on my chevron top and had to pull out and redo a lot of it…

I re-threaded everything and put in a new needle and it seems to be running well again (if noisily), but what I’ve been finding is that it runs for a while and then gets messed up again. Also, now the bobbin winder isn’t working properly either. The round part keeps throwing off the thread. I had to hold it in place while it wound. I think I need a trip to the service guy. 😦 But I don’t want to be without my machine! I have to finish my goal!! I may think about a nicer machine next holiday season. 😦 This is a pretty fancy one, but it’s a Singer.

So, here is a peek at my chevron top so far… I have many more fabrics going into it, but I’ve run out of black. I’ve been stranded for a week as my car has also been in the shop (it isn’t going to last too much longer either.) so I need to get out this weekend and go shopping so I can finish this one up. I am still not sure of the color order or anything yet. I’ll play around when I get to that part.

Some more challenges I am jumping on board with…

Well, I love to be a joiner. I found out about the NewFO challenge recently.

This is a challenge I can get behind. Here, we merely have to start projects each month! I can handle that. Here is what I am starting this month:

20140105-172336.jpg

These are the fabrics I have been gathering for my next chevron top. I am very excited for this one. I am in love with the color scheme. I just hope they work well together in this pattern. I did a lot of calculations and test blocks tonight and then started cutting into the fabric. I believe it’ll be 140 blocks. I’m gonna need more black prints.

Another challenge I want to join in on is

Of course, I have my own cleaning/organizing goals and plans, but who doesn’t want someone to spell out an entire organized home for you? Now, I am skeptical at my long term commitment abilities. I am going to try, but I am already intimidated reading over the first challenge. But, as I’ve said before…. anything I do is better than it is now, right? I just know how I started out all gung ho last year, then life got hard and a lot of my goals went out the window and didn’t seem so important.

I’m going to try, but I am much better at starting stuff and not finishing than at cleaning and organizing my entire home. 😀
